My first year of college was pretty uneventful for a multitude of reasons, the main one being myself. I passed all of my classes with ease but failed to make connections and get involved with my campus. I’ve been reflecting on this a lot as I’ve transferred to a different school and have been outlining what I would do differently. Here are the top five mistakes I made my first year in college and what I will be avoiding with the rest of my career.

5. Picking Electives Wisely

I let my adviser pick most of my electives, I didn’t hate them but I realized there were many classes I could take that I may have found more interesting.

4. College discounts

I was ordering from amazon without an Amazon prime student account for far longer than I would like to admit. Students are given an absurd number of discounts for being students, take all of them.

3.  I bought my textbooks

I bought every single textbook listed for my first semester of college. All of them are sitting in my room taking up space. Don’t buy the textbook, rent. It’s cheaper and won’t clog up your living space when you don’t need them anymore.

2. Sloppy Scheduling

I made my first schedule in a similar fashion to high school where most days I went to class from nine to three, you don’t have to do this. In college, you don’t have to be there for a set number of hours, utilize this flexibility. Give yourself days off and schedule classes that work for you and any other commitments you may have.

1. Not getting involved

This is my biggest regret and had I gotten more involved with my campus I most likely would not have transferred from my initial college. I started the year off made about three friends then the rest of campus was simply only a place to go home or occasionally get some cafeteria food.
